Arts Management – City Management:
Models for Sustainable City Renewal and Cultural Continuity
The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok is calling for papers,
visual presentations, and workshops for our Ninth Urban Culture Research Forum.
The forum aims to encourage researchers, artists, and those involved in urban planning to seek
cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural practices aimed at fostering the development of vibrant, livable
cities and promoting cultural continuity. Visual presentations, workshops, and paper presentations
are welcome to address one or more of the following issues:
• What is the role of the arts in urban planning and community development?
• How can the arts contribute to the creative re-imagining and revitalization of the city?
• What are the good practices of sustainable city renewal?
• What role can artists play in shaping the landscape and soundscape of the city?
• How can the arts contribute to building social cohesion and bridging cultural divisions?
• How can the art communities contribute to cultural continuity?
• How can the arts stimulate participatory citizenship and social interaction?
• What role(s) can culture and the arts play in stimulating economic development?
• How can cities provide spaces for alternative and experimental art forms and activities?
• What are good practices in a city's administration of the arts?
About the URP
When the Urban Research Plaza (URP) was founded in 2001 it was originally named The Urban
Culture Research Center (UCRC) and later changed to its current name in 2006. It is an academic
collaboration and exchange program between Osaka City University, Japan and Chulalongkorn
University's Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Thailand that focuses on topics related to urban
culture in the areas of artistic expression, management, cultural preservation, documentation, and
education.
Deadline for sending abstracts is the 15th of January 2011
Please send abstracts (under 250 words) or visual presentation/workshop proposals (500 words)
and a brief biography (100 words) to the forum staff at: urpcu@yahoo.com.
Authors of selected works will be notified by the 4th of February 2011
Full paper submissions are due on the 15th of April 2011
Papers should be approximately 5000 words long, but not more than 7000 including the abstract,
references and keywords (max 6). Images and figures are only accepted when they are
necessary. Their captions need to be placed at the desired location in the paper, but sent
separately. Low-resolution images may be located in the text and better quality originals sent
independently for ease in emailing and high quality print when published.
Selected papers will be published in the forum's proceedings. Each attendee will be allotted 15
minutes for their presentation followed by a 5-minute Q & A session. Selected workshops may
commence 7 days before the symposium and will culminate in an exhibition, video gallery or
performance scheduled during the forum.
